First clones emerged just after the guessing grid became the viral sensation - within several weeks. Most of them was just some cosmetic changes, altering the list of words for movies, football players or anything else. People who chose another direction kept the mechanics of deduction and dropped the words.
To tell the truth, numeric variations have become a completely different game and its audience consists of those people who felt frustrated by the original version for some reasons that they cannot even articulate.

Why numbers made the game different
Original version can be viewed as consisting of two components. On the one hand, there is the deduction – figuring out the meaning of the feedback. On the other hand, there is the retrieval – finding the proper word which matches the given criteria.
For most people, the latter is a difficult task. You know that the answer should contain green O in the third position and a T, but you cannot think of any word which fits these criteria. It is not a logic puzzle, but the issue of vocabulary access.
Numeric variations eliminate this component almost completely. Everyone can come up with a proper equation or a five-digit number. Only the deduction remains and that is why people good at logic, but poor at word puzzles consider these variations as more appealing.

GameHidden answerAttempts
NerdleAn eight-character arithmetic equation6
PrimelA five-digit prime number6
MathlerThe equation producing a target value6
NumberleA numeric sequence, no arithmetic required6
Nerdle
It appears to be the most popular among all variations. You have to guess an eight-character arithmetic equation like 12+35=47. Tiles work as expected – green if the character is right and positioned right, orange if the character is right but misplaced and grey if the character does not belong to the answer.
Smart thing about this variation is the fact that the equation should be correct. This condition is much stricter than just existence of a word. Both sides of the equation should be matched, and that is why the equation becomes a huge hint while trying to guess the answer.
Experienced players always start with equations containing lots of digits and + and – signs at once, just as balanced word is a good starting point in the original version.

Primel
In this variation you have to guess a five-digit prime number in six attempts. This game is actually quite difficult due to the mathematical, not structural, constraint. Knowing that the digit is misplaced becomes useless if you are not able to think of any other prime numbers to test – which most people are not able to do.
This game rewards people with quite specific number sense and this variation has quite a small, but devoted community.

Mathler and variants
Mathler gives you the target number and asks to find the equation producing this result. This game is actually the opposite of the original one. Numberle is the simplest variation, hiding a numeric sequence without any arithmetic constraints. There are also Summle, Ooodle and other versions investigating the same topic.
The rule is very simple – the more mathematically constrained the solution is, the more domain knowledge is valued instead of deduction.

What these variations can teach
There is a quite strong argument in favor of using these variations for educational purposes, and it is stronger than the corresponding argument in favor of the word versions.
Repetition with the immediate feedback is great for arithmetic fluency, and Nerdle provides it. When a student plays this game regularly, he/she makes dozens of mental calculations and checks them. It is much better than any worksheet because the feedback comes literally in less than a second.
Deduction skills also transfer. No matter what evidence is, reasoning about what can be eliminated on the basis of this evidence is the same skill.

Why word versions prevail
However, despite all this, numeric variations are significantly less popular, and the reason for it has to be mentioned. Words have meanings, and solving the word puzzle brings quite meaningful satisfaction that equations cannot provide. Being satisfied with the word is much more satisfying than being satisfied with 12+35=47.
There is also the problem of shareability. Part of the appeal of the original game is its social aspect, and equations do not look appealing during conversations.

Playing both
The rational strategy would be regarding these versions as complementary, not competitive. If you enjoy deduction, numeric versions become more focused experience. If you enjoy words, then numeric versions will feel empty to you.
People usually understand that they need both of them in different situations, and the word version is the one you can solve without any warm-up. However, if you want this version without any daily limitations, you can find it on wordleunlimited.dev with word lengths from 3 to 7 characters, as well as timed and multiplayer modes.
The true value of the genre is the fact that it demonstrated the effectiveness of the deduction loop for any kind of hidden information. Words, equations, primes, countries, film scenes. Mechanics are always the essence of the game, and numeric versions prove it.
